These solje brooches were traditional in Norway as wedding jewelry. This particular one by Marius Hammer of Bergen, Norway is an exceptionally large and fine example with intricate and delicately lacy wire work and was made around 1900 to 1910. The workshop of Marius Hammer, in operation from about 1890 to 1927, is renowned throughout the world for it's fine craftsmanship and exceptional design, and is much sought-after by today's collector. Another similar though smaller example, but with enamel, is currently listed on an antiques website for $1500.
