eBay hopes that, by the end of the year, shoppers will use their mobile devices to snap pictures of items they want to buy to easily find them on the eBay marketplace.

eBay President and CEO John Donahoe introduced this concept at last week's X.commerce conference when he announced a new image-recognition feature that will be available on an eBay app later this year. The technology, he explained, will allow shoppers to take a photo of an item with their mobile devices, and use it to scan eBay's inventory to find matches for the product.

Donahoe did not say which of eBay's several apps will include this feature, or if it will be helpful in finding any item on eBay or just clothing and accessories, according to news reports.

Amazon and Google reportedly already offer similar features.
