For online sellers looking to expand internationally, it appears Australia is a market that's ready and willing to spend beyond its borders.

ZippyCart reports Australian online shoppers spend 43 percent of their money with merchants located outside of Australia. The e-commerce shopping cart comparison engine cites research by the Australian Payment Clearing Association, which reveals that only 57 percent of all Australian e-commerce spending was with domestic companies during December 2008.

Meanwhile, Forrester Research estimates Australian shoppers spent a total of $23 billion online in 2008—creating a potential $9.9 billion opportunity for e-commerce companies located elsewhere.

ZippyCart surmises that the unstable economy has contributed to shoppers looking for the best deals online, while also making it tough for smaller local retailers to move to an online selling model.
